Mobile wallet fraud linked to betting apps
Mobile wallets make sending money easy, and scammers know it. JazzCash, Easypaisa and other wallets are not part of these scams, but their users are targeted. Here is how to protect yourself.
Common tricks
- Personal number deposits: you are told to send money to an individual's wallet number. Once sent, it is very difficult to reverse.
- Fake payment screenshots: "agents" show fake screenshots of payouts to other users.
- OTP requests: someone posing as support asks for the code sent to your phone. That code can let them take over your account.
- Fake helpline calls: callers claim to be from your wallet company or a government office and ask you to "verify" your account.
- Account renting: people are offered money to let others use their wallet account. This can involve you directly in fraud and money laundering.
Protect your wallet
- Never share your PIN, OTP or CNIC details with anyone, including "support".
- Only use the official app downloaded from Google Play or the App Store.
- Turn on all available security features, such as login alerts and biometric lock.
- Do not let anyone else use your wallet account, for any payment.
- Check that an incoming call or SMS is genuinely from the company. Official companies do not ask for your PIN.
If money has already gone
- Contact your wallet or bank immediately through the helpline shown inside the official app or on its official website.
- Give them the transaction ID, date, time, amount and the receiver's number.
- Ask them to record a complaint and give you a reference number.
- Report the fraud to the authorities. Our reporting guide explains where.
The sooner you report, the better the chance that funds can be held.
Common questions
Can JazzCash or Easypaisa refund money sent to a betting app?
It depends on the case. Payments you made yourself are hard to reverse, but reporting quickly with full details gives the best chance.
