How to spot fake casino and betting apps

Most betting apps that target Pakistani users are not on the official app stores. They are shared as APK files on WhatsApp, Telegram and TikTok. Here is how they usually work and the signs to watch for.

How the scam usually works

1. You see an ad or video showing someone winning a large amount.
2. You are sent a link to download an APK file, outside Google Play.
3. You get a "welcome bonus" and small early wins to build trust.
4. You are asked to deposit through JazzCash, Easypaisa or a bank transfer, often into a personal number.
5. When you try to withdraw, new conditions appear: a higher balance needed, a "verification fee", a "tax", or your account is suddenly under review.
6. Support stops replying, or the app disappears and comes back under a new name.

Warning signs

• The app is only available as an APK file, not on Google Play or the App Store.
• You are told to pay into a personal mobile wallet number, not a company account.
• The payment number changes every few days.
• The website address keeps changing, or you are told to use a VPN.
• There are claims like "100% legal in Pakistan", "guaranteed win" or "earn daily from home".
• Withdrawal needs a fee, a tax, or a minimum balance that keeps rising.
• The app asks for permissions it does not need, such as contacts, SMS or accessibility access.
• Reviews and "winner" screenshots look copied or repeated.

Risks beyond losing money

• Data theft: APK apps can read your SMS, which may include wallet OTP codes.
• Identity misuse: CNIC photos and selfies sent for "verification" can be used to open accounts in your name.
• Blackmail: some apps collect contacts and photos and later threaten users.
• Account blocks: wallets linked to suspicious activity can be frozen.

Already installed one?

• Stop depositing money immediately.
• Uninstall the app and check Settings for any device admin or accessibility permissions you gave it.
• Change your wallet PIN and email passwords from a safe device.
• Save screenshots, chat messages and transaction IDs.
